Claims: | 1. An oral dosage form comprising: particles comprising a therapeutically effective amount of an opioid analgesic and a hydrophobic material; and particles comprising an effective amount of an aversive agent to discourage an abuser from tampering with the dosage form and thereafter injecting the tampered dosage form and a modified or a sustained release carrier selected from the group consisting of gums, cellulose ethers, acrylic resins, protein derived materials, waxes, shellac, oils and mixtures of any of the foregoing materials, wherein the aversive agent is an irritant, and the irritant is coated with the modified or the sustained release carrier or is dispersed in a matrix of the modified or the sustained release carrier. 2. The oral dosage form of claim 1, wherein the irritant is selected from the group consisting of capsaicin, a capsaicin analog, and mixtures thereof. 3. The oral dosage form of claim 2, wherein the irritant is a capsaicin analog selected from the group consisting of resiniferatoxin, tinyatoxin, heptanoylisobutylamide, heptanoyl guaiacylamide, other isobutylamides or guaiacylamides, dihydrocapsaicin, homovanillyl octylester, nonanoyl vanillylamide, and mixtures thereof. 4. The oral dosage form of claim 1, wherein the hydrophobic material comprises an acrylic polymer. 5. The oral dosage form of claim 1, wherein the hydrophobic material comprises ethylcellulose. 6. The oral dosage form of claim 1, wherein the irritant is in a sequestered form. 7. The oral dosage form of claim 6, wherein said irritant is dispersed in a matrix comprising a sequestering material that substantially prevents the release of said irritant. 8. The oral dosage form of claim 1, which is a controlled release oral formulation. 9. The oral dosage form of claim 1, wherein said opioid analgesic is morphine, codeine, tramadol, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt of any of the foregoing. 10. The oral dosage form of claim 1, wherein said opioid analgesic is hydromorphone or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. 11. The oral dosage form of claim 1, wherein said opioid analgesic is hydrocodone or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. 12. The oral dosage form of claim 1, wherein said opioid analgesic is oxycodone or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. 13. The oral dosage form of claim 1, wherein the particles of said opioid analgesic comprise inert beads. 14. The oral dosage form of claim 1, wherein the aversive agent provides a burning sensation to an abuser upon inhalation or injection of said dosage form after crushing, shearing, grinding, chewing, dissolution in a solvent, heating, or any combination thereof. |
