where R.sup.1 is n-propyl; R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 are both hydroxyl; R is OCH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 OH or a protected derivative thereof; and L is halogen or SR, or said hydroxyl groups R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 are protected as groups OP.sup.1 and OP.sup.2 where P.sup.1 and P.sup.2 are protecting groups selected from the group consisting of C.sub.1-6 alkyl, benzyl, C.sub.1-6 alkyl).sub.3 Si and C(O)C.sub.1-6 alkyl or said groups P.sup.1 and P.sup.2, together with the atoms to which they are attached, may form an alkylidene ring or an alkoxymethylidene ring.
