Assignee: Allosource (Centennial, CO)
Application Number:11/557,393
Patent Claims:1. An apparatus for treating allograffs, comprising: (a) a sonication tank configured to transmit ultrasonic energy to the interior of the tank, and said sonication tank configured to contain a sonication fluid; (b) a treatment canister supported by said sonication tank, the treatment canister configured to receive and rotatably position allografts therein with respect to the sonication tank, and the treatment canister sealed with respect to the sonication tank such that the sonication fluid cannot enter the interior of said treatment canister; and (c) a treatment fluid source having a line in fluid communication with, and rotatably coupled to, said treatment canister, the treatment fluid source configured to supply at least one treatment fluid to the interior of the treatment canister supported by the sonication tank, and said line rotatably coupled with said treatment canister configured to allow simultaneous rotation of the canister and exchange of the treatment fluid with said treatment canister while said treatment canister remains in fluid communication with the fluid source.

2. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a motor for rotating said treatment canister within said sonication tank.

3. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a plurality of treatment fluid sources in selective fluid communication with the interior of said treatment canister supported by said sonication tank.

4. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a fluid control system adapted for exchanging treatment fluid in said treatment canister without removing the allografts from the treatment canister.

5. The apparatus of claim 4, wherein said apparatus includes at least first and second treatment fluid sources, and said control system is adapted for delivering the first treatment fluid to said treatment canister and for replacing the first treatment fluid in said treatment canister with the second treatment fluid.

6. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the sonication tank comprises at least four canisters for the processing of up to 4 different donors at once and can be configured for more donors at a time.

7. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a treatment fluid outlet in fluid communication with said treatment canister and a filter in selective fluid communication with said treatment fluid outlet.

8. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said treatment canister has a rotational axis, and the interior of said treatment canister has a non-circular cross-sectional shape in a plane orthogonal to said rotational axis.

9. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a temperature controller configured to control temperature of the sonication fluid.

10. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a programmable logic controller in communication with the sonication tank and configured to control the amount of ultrasonic energy transmitted to the interior of the tank.

11. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the treatment fluid has a ratio ranging from about 1:5 to about 1:2 of solution (ml) to tissue (g).

12. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the treatment fluid has a ratio of about 1:2 of solution (ml) to tissue (g).

13. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the canister comprises one or more internal baffles.

14. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the canister comprises one or more grooves or ribs on an inner surface of the canister.

15. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said treatment fluid source is configured to supply sterile water to said treatment canister while in the sonication tank.

16. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said treatment fluid source is in communication with a source of sterile water while in said sonication tank.

17. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising an internal basket within said treatment canister.

18. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein said treatment canister defines a longitudinal axis for rotation, and said line from the treatment fluid source enters the treatment at the longitudinal axis for rotation.

19. An apparatus for treating allografts, comprising: (a) a sonication tank configured to transmit ultrasonic energy to the interior of the tank, wherein the ultrasonic energy is transmitted at a frequency of between about 40 kHz and about 170 kHz with a power output between about 100 watts/gallon and about 550 watts/gallon, and said sonication tank configured to contain a sonication fluid; (b) a treatment canister supported by said sonication tank, and said treatment canister configured to receive allografts therein with respect to said sonication tank, and said treatment canister sealed with respect to said sonication tank such that said sonication fluid cannot enter the interior of said treatment canister; and (c) a plurality of treatment fluid sources having a line in selective fluid communication with, and rotatably coupled to, the interior of said treatment canister, said treatment fluid sources configured to supply treatment fluids to the interior of said treatment canister supported by said sonication tank, and said rotatably coupled with said treatment canister configured to allow simultaneous rotation of the canister and exchange of the treatment fluid with said treatment canister while said treatment canister remains in fluid communication with the fluid source.

20. The apparatus of claim 19, further comprising a fluid input line to supply treatment fluids to the interior of said treatment canister supported by said sonication tank.

21. The apparatus of claim 19, further comprising a fluid outlet line to receive treatment fluids from the interior of said treatment canister supported by said sonication tank.

22. The apparatus of claim 19, wherein said treatment fluid sources are configured to supply sterile water to said treatment canister while in said sonication tank.

23. The apparatus of claim 19, wherein said treatment fluid source is in communication with a source of sterile water while in said sonication tank.

24. The apparatus of claim 17, wherein said internal basket is rotatably mounted within said treatment canister so as to allow said internal basket to rotate while said treatment canister remains stationary.

25. The apparatus of claim 19, further comprising an internal basket within said treatment canister.

26. The apparatus of claim 25, wherein said internal basket is rotatably mounted within said treatment canister so as to allow said internal basket to rotate while said treatment canister remains stationary.

27. The apparatus of claim 19, wherein said treatment canister defines a longitudinal axis for rotation, and said line from the treatment fluid source enters the treatment at the longitudinal axis for rotation.
