Abstract:A method for treating hypoparathyroidism and/or hypocalcemia by local administration of a neurotoxin, such as a botulinum toxin, to a parathyroid gland, thereby reducing an inhibitory effect upon parathyroid hormone secretion. A method for treating hyperparathyroidism and/or hypercalcemia by local administration of a neurotoxin, such as a botulinum toxin, to a sympathetic ganglion which innervates a parathyroid hormone secreting parathyroid cell, thereby reducing a stimulatory effect upon parathyroid hormone secretion.

Patent Claims:1. A method for treating hypercalcemia resulting from hyperparathyroidism, the method comprising the step of administration of a Clostridial neurotoxin to a sympathetic ganglion which innervates a parathyroid gland, thereby treating hypercalcemia resulting from hyperparathyroidism.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the Clostridial neurotoxin is administered in an amount of between about 10.sup.-3 U/kg and about 35 U/kg.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the Clostridial neurotoxin is a botulinum toxin.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein the botulinum toxin is selected from the group consisting of botulinum toxin types A, B, C.sub.1, D, E, F and G.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the Clostridial neurotoxin is botulinum toxin type A.

6. A method for treating hypercalcemia, resulting from hyperparathyroidism, the method comprising the step of administration of a therapeutically effective amount of a botulinum toxin to a sympathetic ganglion which innervates a parathyroid gland, thereby treating hypercalcemia resulting from hyperparathyroidism.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein the botulinum toxin is selected from the group consisting of botulinum toxin types A, B, C.sub.1, D, E, F and G.

8. A method for treating hypercalcemia, resulting from hyperparathyroidism, the method comprising the step of local administration to a sympathetic ganglion which innervates a parathyroid cell of a therapeutically effective amount of a botulinum toxin, thereby decreasing a parathyroid hormone secretion from a parathyroid C cell and treating hypercalcemia resulting from hyperparathyroidism.

9. The method of claim 8, wherein the botulinum toxin is selected from the group consisting of botulinum toxin types A, B, C.sub.1, D, E, F and G.

10. The method of claim 8, wherein the botulinum toxin is botulinum toxin type A.
