Abstract: Composition containing quaternary ammonium compounds in which the nitrogen atom is substituted by at least one alkyl group having at least 12 carbon atoms, the composition including at least 20% in weight by weight of the total composition, of ammonium halides in which the nitrogen atom is substituted by at least one alkyl group having at least 14 carbon atoms and more than 5%, preferably more than 7% in weight by weight of the total composition, of ammonium halides in which the nitrogen atom is substituted by at least one alkyl group having at least 16 carbon atoms. Ophthalmic oil-in-water emulsions containing such compositions, the ophthalmic emulsions being useful for eye care or for the treatment of eye conditions are also disclosed.

Patent Claims: 1. An oil-in-water emulsion comprising: 1% to 5% w/w of an oil phase selected from the group consisting of medium chain triglycerides and mineral oils; 0.0005% to 0.1% w/w of cetalkonium chloride as the sole ammonium halide of the emulsion; and 0.3% w/w of tyloxapol.

2. The oil-in-water emulsion according to claim 1, wherein the oil phase is medium chain triglycerides.

3. The oil-in-water emulsion according to claim 2, wherein the amount of medium chain triglycerides is 2% w/w.

4. The oil-in-water emulsion according to claim 1, wherein the amount of mineral oils is 1% w/w.

5. The oil-in-water emulsion according to claim 1, wherein the oil phase is mineral oils, said mineral oils being a mixture of heavy mineral oil and light mineral oil wherein the ratio of heavy mineral oil to light mineral oil is equal to 1:1.

6. The oil-in-water emulsion according to claim 5, wherein the amount of light mineral oil is 0.5% w/w and the amount of heavy mineral oil is 0.5% w/w.

7. The oil-in-water emulsion according to claim 1, wherein the amount of cetalkonium chloride is 0.001% to 0.02% w/w.

8. The oil-in-water emulsion according to claim 1, wherein the amount of cetalkonium chloride is selected from the group consisting of 0.001%, 0.0025%, 0.005%, 0.01%, 0.02%, 0.04% and 0.1% w/w.

9. The oil-in-water emulsion according to claim 1, further comprising poloxamer 188.

10. The oil-in-water emulsion according to claim 9, wherein the amount of poloxamer 188 is 0.1% w/w.

11. The oil-in-water emulsion according to claim 1, further comprising buffering agents and/or at least one tonicity agent.

12. The oil-in-water emulsion according to claim 11, wherein the tonicity agent is mannitol.

13. The oil-in-water emulsion according to claim 11, wherein the tonicity agent is glycerol.

14. The oil-in-water emulsion according to claim 1, said emulsion having a positive zeta potential.

15. The oil-in-water emulsion according to claim 1, said emulsion having a droplet size of 100 to 500 nm.

16. The oil-in-water emulsion according to claim 1, said emulsion being hypotonic, relative to normal tears.

17. The oil-in-water emulsion according to claim 1, wherein said emulsion is in the form of a gel suitable for ophthalmic use.

18. An oil-in-water emulsion comprising: 0.5% w/w of light mineral oil; 0.5% w/W of heavy mineral oil; 0.002% w/w of cetalkonium chloride; 0.3% w/w of tyloxapol; and 0.1% w/w of poloxamer 188, wherein the cetalkonium chloride is the sole ammonium halide of the composition.

19. An oil-in-water emulsion comprising: 1% to 2% w/w of medium chain triglycerides; 0.005% to 0.02% w/w of cetalkonium chloride; 0.3% w/w of tyloxapol; and 0.1% w/w of poloxamer 188, wherein the cetalkonium chloride is the sole ammonium halide of the composition.
