Assignee: Zurex Pharma, Inc. (Middleton, WI)
Application Number:12/154,557
Patent Claims: 1. A method of disinfecting a skin surface, comprising: applying an effective amount of an antimicrobial composition to a skin surface to be disinfected, wherein the antimicrobial composition has a pH of about 3 to about 7 and comprises (a) about 30% by weight or more of ethanol, isopropyl alcohol, n-propanol, or a mixture thereof, (b) about 1.5% to 15% by weight citric acid, (c) about 0.01 percent to about 1% by weight paraben, and (d) about 0.01% to about 0.2% by weight methylene blue.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein said applying comprises: scrubbing the skin surface with the antimicrobial composition for up to sixty seconds.

3. The method of claim 2, further comprising, prior to said scrubbing, heating the antimicrobial composition.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein said applying comprises scrubbing the skin surface with the antimicrobial composition for up to thirty seconds.

5. The method of claim 1, further comprising allowing the skin surface to dry.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the skin surface is a mucosal surface.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein said composition comprises isopropyl alcohol.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the composition comprises methyl paraben at a concentration of from about 0.1 percent to about 0.4percent by weight, and propyl paraben at a concentration of from about 0.01 percent to about 0.2 percent by weight.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the composition comprises about 0.03 percent to about 0.12 percent by weight methylene blue.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein the composition comprises about 4 percent to about 8 percent by weight citric acid.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein the composition comprises about 0.2 percent to about 0.9 percent by weight sodium citrate.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein the composition is applied using an applicator comprising an absorbent material having the antimicrobial composition absorbed therein.

13. The method of claim 1, wherein the skin surface comprises the skin region of a patient where a surgical procedure will be performed or a vascular access device is to be implanted.

14. A method of disinfecting an open soft tissue wound, comprising: washing the wound with an effective amount of an antimicrobial composition to disinfect the wound, wherein the antimicrobial composition has a pH of about 3 to about 7and comprises (a) about 30% by weight or more of ethanol, isopropyl alcohol, n-propanol, or a mixture thereof, (b) about 1.5% to 15% by weight citric acid, (c) about 0.01 percent to about 1% by weight paraben, and (d) about 0.01% to about 0.2% by weight methylene blue.

15. A method of disinfecting a surgical instrument, comprising: submerging a surgical instrument in an antimicrobial composition to disinfect the instrument, wherein the antimicrobial composition has a pH of about 3 to about 7 and comprises (a) about 30% by weight or more of ethanol, isopropyl alcohol, n-propanol, or a mixture thereof, (b) about 1.5% to 15% by weight citric acid, (c) about 0.01 percent to about 1% by weight paraben, and (d) about 0.01% to about 0.2% by weight methylene blue.

16. The method of claim 1, wherein the composition comprises at least about 60% by weight isopropyl alcohol.

17. The method of claim 1, wherein the composition comprises (a) about 30% by weight or more of ethanol, isopropyl alcohol, n-propanol, or a mixture thereof, (b) about 4% to 8% by weight citric acid, (c) about 0.1% to about 0.4% by weight methyl paraben and about 0.01% to about 0.2% by weight propyl paraben, (d) about 0.03 percent to about 0.09% by weight methylene blue, and (e) about 0.2% to about 0.9% by weight sodium citrate.

18. The method of claim 17, wherein the composition comprises at least about 60% by weight isopropyl alcohol.
