Patent Claims: 1. A compound of formula I: ##STR00429## wherein X is CR.sup.6'R.sup.6, or C.dbd.CR.sup.6'R.sup.6; E is NR.sup.7dR.sup.7e or OR.sup.7f; R.sup.2, R.sup.2', R.sup.4', R.sup.4a and R.sup.4b are each independently hydrogen, or alkyl; R.sup.3, R.sup.10, R.sup.11 and R.sup.12 are each hydrogen; R.sup.4 is NR.sup.4aR.sup.4b; R.sup.5 and R.sup.5' are each independently hydroxyl, hydrogen or alkyl; R.sup.6 and R.sup.6' are each independently hydrogen, hydroxyl, or alkyl; R.sup.7a, R.sup.7b, R.sup.7c, R.sup.7d, R.sup.7e and R.sup.7f are each independently hydrogen, alkyl, alkenyl, aryl, or arylalkyl, or R.sup.7c and R.sup.7d or R.sup.7e and R.sup.7f are linked to form a ring; R.sup.8 is hydrogen; and R.sup.9 is hydrogen, alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, aryl, alkoxy, amino, or aminoalkyl, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof.

2. The compound of claim 1, wherein X is CR.sup.6'R.sup.6, R.sup.4a and R.sup.4b are each alkyl, and R.sup.2, R.sup.2', R.sup.4', R.sup.5, R.sup.5', R.sup.6, R.sup.6', and R.sup.9 are each hydrogen.

3. The compound of claim 1, wherein said substituted tetracycline compound is: ##STR00430## ##STR00431## ##STR00432## ##STR00433## ##STR00434## ##STR00435## and pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof.

4. A method for treating a bacterial infection, a viral infection, or a parasitic infection in a subject, comprising administering to said subject an effective amount of a compound of claim 1, such that said subject is treated.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein said parasitic infection is malaria.

6. The method of claim 4, wherein said compound is administered with a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier.

7. A pharmaceutical composition comprising a therapeutically effective amount of a compound of claim 1 and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier.

8. The composition of claim 7, wherein said therapeutically effective amount is effective to treat a bacterial infection, a viral infection, or a parasitic infection.

9. A compound of the structure: ##STR00436## or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof.

10. The composition of claim 8, wherein said parasitic infection is malaria.
