Patent Claims: 1. A compound of formula I: wherein X is CR6′R6, or C═CR6′R6; E is NR7dR7e or OR7f; R2, R2′, R4′, R4a and R4b are each independently hydrogen, or alkyl; R3, R10, R11 and R12 are each hydrogen; R4 is NR4aR4b; R5 and R5′ are each independently hydroxyl, hydrogen or alkyl; R6 and R6′ are each independently hydrogen, hydroxyl, or alkyl; R7a, R7b, R7c, R7d, R7e and R7f are each independently hydrogen, alkyl, alkenyl, aryl, or arylalkyl, or R7c and R7d or R7e and R7f are linked to form a ring; R8 is hydrogen; and R9 is hydrogen, alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, aryl, alkoxy, amino, or aminoalkyl, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof.

2. The compound of claim 1, wherein X is CR6′R6, R4a and R4b are each alkyl, and R2, R2′, R4′, R5, R5′, R6, R6′, and R9 are each hydrogen.

3. The compound of claim 1, wherein said substituted tetracycline compound is: and pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof.

4. A method for treating a bacterial infection, a viral infection, or a parasitic infection in a subject, comprising administering to said subject an effective amount of a compound of claim 1, such that said subject is treated.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein said parasitic infection is malaria.

6. The method of claim 4, wherein said compound is administered with a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier.

7. A pharmaceutical composition comprising a therapeutically effective amount of a compound of claim 1 and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier.

8. The composition of claim 7, wherein said therapeutically effective amount is effective to treat a bacterial infection, a viral infection, or a parasitic infection.

9. A compound of the structure: or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof.

10. The composition of claim 8, wherein said parasitic infection is malaria.
