1. A method of inhibiting the growth of protozoa in animals which comprises administering a protozoal inhibiting amount of an α-substituted amino acid or an α-substituted amine having the formula ##STR35## wherein R1 is hydrogen or carboxy;Y is selected from the group consisting of CH2 F, CHF2, CF3 and C.tbd.CH; Z is selected from the group consisting of H2 N--(CH2)3, ##STR36## and H2 N-CH2 CH═CH; with the proviso that when R1 is hydrogen, Y cannot be CF3 and Z must be ##STR37## and the salts and individual optical isomers thereof. 2. A method according to claim 1 wherein R1 is hydrogen. 3. A method according to claim 1 wherein R1 is carboxy. 4. A method according to claim 1 wherein Z is ##STR38## or H2 N--(CH2)3. 5. A method according to claim 1 wherein Y is CHF2. 6. A method according to claim 1 wherein the animals are fowl and the α-substituted amino acid or α-substituted amine is administered to their drinking water at a concentration of from 0.01% to 2.0%. 7. The method according to claim 6 wherein the α-substituted amino acid or α-substituted amine is administered at a concentration of from 0.06% to 1.0%. 8. A method of inhibiting the growth of protozoa in animals which comprises administering a protozoal inhibiting amount of an α-substituted amino acid or an α-substituted amine having the formula ##STR39## wherein R1 is hydrogen or carboxy;Y is selected from the group consisting of CH2 F, CHF2, CF3 and C.tbd.CH; is selected from the group consisting of H2 N--(CH2)3, ##STR40## and H2 N-CH2 CH═CH; with the proviso that when R1 is hydrogen, Y cannot be CF3 and Z must be ##STR41## and the salts and individual optical isomers thereof in combination with an antiprotozoal agent selected from the group consisting of Antrycide, Pentamidine, Amicarbalide and Bleomycin. 9. A method according to claim 8 wherein R1 is hydrogen. 10. A method according to claim 8 wherein R1 is carboxy. 11. A method according to claim 8 wherein Z is ##STR42## or H2 N-(CH2)3. 12. A method according to claim 8 wherein Y is CHF2. 13. A method according to claim 8 wherein the animals are fowl and the α-substituted amino acid or α-substituted amine is administered to their drinking water at a concentration of from 0.01% to 2.0%. 14. A method according to claim 13 wherein the α-substituted amino acid or α-substituted amine is administered at a concentration of from 0.06% to 1.0%. 15. A method according to claim 1 wherein Y is CH2 F. 16. A method according to claim 8 wherein Y is CH2 F. |
