Summary for Patent: 11,602,603
Title:Nasal delivery devices
Abstract:A nasal delivery device for and a method of delivering substance to a nasal airway of a subject, the nasal delivery device comprising: a mouthpiece (519) through which the subject in use exhales to cause closure of the oropharyngeal velum of the subject; a nosepiece (517) for fitting to a nostril of a subject, the nosepiece including a nozzle (549) through which substance is in use delivered to the nasal airway; and a manually-actuatable substance supply unit (520) for delivering substance through the nozzle of the nosepiece.

Assignee: Optinose Inc
Application Number:US17/305,260
Patent Claims: 1. A nasal delivery device for delivering a substance to a nasal airway of a subject, comprising: a housing; a mouthpiece through which the subject in use exhales to cause closure of the oropharyngeal velum of the subject; a nosepiece for fitting to a nostril of the subject, wherein the nosepiece includes a nozzle through which the substance is in use delivered as an aerosol spray into the nasal airway of the subject; a manually-actuatable substance supply unit for delivering the substance through the nozzle, wherein the substance supply unit comprises a substance-containing chamber which contains the substance and extends from an aperture in the housing as an actuating part of the substance supply unit, and a mechanical delivery pump which is actuatable by depression of the substance-containing chamber to deliver the substance from the nozzle; and a valve assembly which is fluidly connected to the mouthpiece and the nosepiece and operable between a closed configuration substantially blocking a fluid communication path between the mouthpiece and the nosepiece and an open configuration permitting a flow of fluid through the fluid communication path between the mouthpiece and the nosepiece, wherein the substance-containing chamber is coupled to the valve assembly and configured to provide for simultaneous actuation of the mechanical delivery pump and opening of the valve assembly to deliver an air flow through the fluid communication path simultaneously with delivery of the substance through the nosepiece and to the nasal airway of the subject, wherein the air flow includes a higher pressure or volume when the valve assembly is initially opened compared to a steady state pressure or volume of the air flow after the valve assembly is opened for a predetermined time.

2. The delivery device of claim 1, wherein the substance is a liquid substance.

3. The delivery device of claim 1, wherein the nosepiece includes a sealing member which provides for a tight sealing fit with the nostril of the subject.

4. The delivery device of claim 1, wherein the housing includes an inwardly-tapering section which is downstream of the valve assembly and fluidly connected to the nosepiece.

5. The delivery device of claim 1, wherein the nozzle is disposed co-axially with a delivery channel of the nosepiece.

6. The delivery device of claim 1, wherein the substance supply unit is configured to deliver a metered dose of the substance in a delivery operation.

7. The delivery device of claim 1, wherein the substance supply unit is a multi-dose unit which is configured to deliver a plurality of metered doses of the substance in successive delivery operations.

8. The nasal delivery device of claim 1, wherein delivery of the substance is intended to treat allergic or non-allergic nasal inflammation.

9. The nasal delivery device of claim 8, wherein the nasal inflammation is associated with infection.

10. The nasal delivery device of claim 1, wherein delivery of the substance is intended to treat nasal polyps.

11. The nasal delivery device of claim 1, wherein delivery of the substance is intended to treat rhinitis.

12. The nasal delivery device of claim 1, wherein the substance is an anti-histamine, cromoglycate, steroid, antibiotic, decongestant, anti-microbial agent, or pharmaceutical.

13. The nasal delivery device of claim 1, wherein the substance is delivered from the nozzle as an aerosol.

14. The nasal delivery device of claim 1, wherein the mechanical delivery pump is a liquid delivery pump which delivers metered doses of the substance upon actuation.

15. The nasal delivery device of claim 1, wherein the substance is a substance configured to treat allergic or non-allergic nasal inflammation.

16. The nasal delivery device of claim 15, wherein the nasal inflammation is associated with infection.

17. The nasal delivery device of claim 1, wherein the substance is a substance configured to treat nasal polyps.

18. The nasal delivery device of claim 1, wherein the substance is a substance configured to treat rhinitis.

19. A method of delivering a substance to a nasal airway of a subject, comprising: providing a delivery device which comprises: a housing; a mouthpiece through which the subject exhales; a nosepiece for fitting to a nostril of the subject, wherein the nosepiece includes a nozzle through which the substance is delivered as an aerosol spray into the nasal airway of the subject; a manually-actuatable substance supply unit for delivering the substance through the nozzle, wherein the substance supply unit comprises a substance-containing chamber which contains the substance and extends from an aperture in the housing as an actuating part of the substance supply unit, and a mechanical delivery pump which is actuatable by depression of the substance-containing chamber to deliver the substance from the nozzle; and a valve assembly which is fluidly connected to the mouthpiece and the nosepiece and operable between a closed configuration substantially blocking a fluid communication path between the mouthpiece and the nosepiece and an open configuration permitting a flow of fluid through the fluid communication path between the mouthpiece and the nosepiece, wherein the substance-containing chamber is coupled to the valve assembly and configured to provide for simultaneous actuation of the mechanical delivery pump and opening of the valve assembly to deliver an air flow through the fluid communication path simultaneously with delivery of the substance through the nosepiece and to the nasal airway of the subject; fitting the nosepiece to the nostril of the subject; the subject exhaling through the mouthpiece to close the oropharyngeal velum of the subject; and manually actuating the substance supply unit by depressing the substance-containing chamber to provide simultaneously for delivery of the substance from the nozzle and opening of the valve assembly to provide an air flow, as a burst of air, to the nasal airway of the subject.

20. The method of claim 19, wherein the substance is a liquid substance.

21. The method of claim 19, wherein the nosepiece fitting comprises: fitting the nosepiece to the nostril of the subject so that the nosepiece is in sealing engagement with the nostril of the subject.

22. The method of claim 19, wherein the housing includes an inwardly-tapering section which is downstream of the valve assembly and fluidly connected to the nosepiece.

23. The method of claim 19, wherein the nozzle is disposed co-axially with a delivery channel of the nosepiece.

24. The method of claim 19, wherein the substance supply unit delivers a metered dose of the substance in a delivery operation.

25. The method of claim 19, wherein the substance supply unit is a multi-dose unit which delivers a plurality of metered doses of the substance in successive delivery operations.
