Patent Claims: 1. A composition comprising a seven carbon fatty acid source selected from the group consisting of n-heptanoic acid, a triglyceride comprising n-heptanoic acid and triheptanoin, wherein the composition has an acid value of 0.1 or less mg KOH/gr, a hydroxyl value of 2.8 or less mg KOH/gr and wherein the composition is formulated for parenteral, oral, or enteral administration.

2. The composition of claim 1, wherein the seven carbon fatty acid source is heptanoic acid or a triglyceride thereof.

3. The composition of claim 1, wherein the seven carbon fatty acid source is heptanoin, heptanoate, or triheptanoin.

4. The composition of claim 1, wherein the composition is provided in an amount suitable for administration in a range of 1 to 4 grams per kilogram body weight per day.

5. The composition of claim 1, wherein the composition is provided in an amount suitable for administration in a range of 1 to 3 grams per kilogram body weight per day.

6. The composition of claim 1, wherein the composition is provided in an amount suitable for administration in a range of 1 to 2 grams per kilogram body weight per day.

7. The composition of claim 1, wherein the composition is provided in an amount suitable for administration in a range of 0.1 to 2 grams per kilogram body weight per day.

8. The composition of claim 1, wherein the seven carbon fatty acid source is in a dosage unit, wherein the dosage unit comprises at least 15 grams of the seven carbon fatty acid source.

9. The composition of claim 1, wherein the dosage unit comprises 15 to 75 grams of the seven carbon fatty acid source.

10. The composition of claim 1, wherein the dosage unit comprises 75 grams of the seven carbon fatty acid source.

11. The composition of claim 1, wherein the composition is provided in an amount suitable for providing 15% to 40% of the daily dietary calories of a human.

12. The composition of claim 1, wherein the composition is provided in an amount suitable for providing 20% to 35% of the daily dietary calories of a human.

13. The composition of claim 1, wherein the composition is provided in an amount suitable for providing 25% to 35% of the daily dietary calories of a human.

14. The composition of claim 1, wherein the composition is provided in an amount suitable for providing 30% of the daily dietary calories of a human.

15. The composition of claim 1, wherein the composition is provided in an amount suitable for providing 25% of the daily dietary calories of a human.

16. The composition of claim 1, wherein the composition is a nutritional supplement.

17. The composition of claim 1, wherein the composition is a dietary formulation.

18. The composition of claim 1, wherein the composition is a pharmaceutical composition.

19. The composition of claim 1, wherein the composition is administered parenterally.

20. The composition of claim 1, wherein the composition is administered enterally.

21. The composition of claim 1, wherein the composition is administered orally.

22. The composition of claim 1, wherein the composition is provided in an amount suitable for administration in a range of about 1 gram per kilogram body weight per day for an adult for at least 7 or 14 days.

23. The composition of claim 1, wherein the composition is provided in an amount suitable for administration in a range of about 2 to 4 grams per kilogram body weight per day for at least 7 or 14 days.

24. The composition of claim 1, wherein the composition is provided in an amount suitable for administration in a range of about 1 to 2 grams per kilogram body weight per day for at least 7 or 14 days.

25. The composition of claim 1, wherein the dosage unit is at least 25% of the daily fatty acid dose for an adult.

26. The composition of claim 1, wherein the composition is provided in an amount suitable for administration in a range of about 1 to 4 grams per kilogram body weight per day for infants or 0.1 to 2 grams per kilogram body weight per day for adults.
