Summary for Patent: 11,191,908
Title:Syringe shock absorber for use in an injection device
Abstract: An injection device, for example, an auto-injector of any type, includes a sleeve configured to hold a medicament chamber. The sleeve may be sufficiently deformable such that it functions as a shock absorbing member to distribute the force exerted on the medicament chamber during use of the injection device.
Inventor(s): Mehawej; John Pierre (Robbinsdale, MN), Travanty; Michael (Wayzata, MN)
Assignee: Antares Pharma, Inc. (Ewing, NJ)
Application Number:15/503,077
Patent Claims: 1. An injector including a shock absorbing member comprising: a housing configured to be grasped by a user during an injection; a medicament chamber within the housing; a needle guard moveable relative to the housing between an extended position and a retracted position; a sleeve fixed to the housing and configured to receive the medicament chamber, the sleeve having a proximal end and a distal end connected by a middle portion, the sleeve including a locking projection configured to lock the needle guard in the extended position; and a cushion at least partially received by the sleeve, the cushion configured to receive a portion of the medicament chamber; wherein the sleeve includes a compressible element between the proximal end and the distal end that is deformable, wherein the compressible element comprises a plurality of compressible posts spaced about an axis of the sleeve.

2. The injector of claim 1, wherein the sleeve includes an initial length and the sleeve compresses by greater than 0.40% of the initial length when a load is applied to the sleeve.

3. The shock absorbing member of claim 2, wherein the sleeve is irreversibly compressed once the load is removed.

4. The injector of claim 1, wherein the sleeve compresses when a load is applied to the sleeve, wherein the load is a force of 50 lb to 55 lb.

5. The injector of claim 1, wherein the sleeve compresses when a load is applied to the sleeve, wherein the load is an 18.5 lb force.

6. The injector of claim 1, wherein the sleeve compresses when a load is applied to the sleeve, wherein the load is less than a 53 lb force.

7. The injector of claim 1, wherein the sleeve compresses when a load is applied to the sleeve, wherein the sleeve includes an initial length and the sleeve returns substantially to the initial length once the load is removed.

8. The injector of claim 1, wherein the compressible element is located at the distal end of the sleeve.

9. The shock absorbing member of claim 1, wherein the compressible element is located at the proximal end of the sleeve.

10. The shock absorbing member of claim 1, wherein the compressible element is located at a middle portion of the sleeve.

11. The injector of claim 1, wherein the plurality of compressible posts are separated from each other by a space.

12. The injector of claim 1, wherein the plurality of compressible posts are generally parallel with a longitudinal axis of the injector.

13. The injector of claim 1, wherein at least one post of the plurality of compressible posts is radially bent.

14. The injector of claim 1, wherein the plurality of compressible posts are configured to bend in a predetermined direction.

15. The injector of claim 1, wherein the plurality of compressible posts are helically wrapped about a post axis.

16. The injector of claim 1, wherein the distal end of the sleeve extends at least partially past a distal end of the housing.

17. The injector of claim 1, wherein the proximal end of the sleeve is moved toward the distal end of the sleeve as the compressible element deforms.

18. The injector of claim 1, wherein at least a portion of the cushion is proximal to the proximal end of the sleeve.

19. An injector including a shock absorbing member comprising: a housing configured to be grasped by a user during an injection; a medicament chamber within the housing; a sleeve configured to receive the medicament chamber, the sleeve having a proximal end and a distal end connected by a middle portion; and wherein the sleeve includes a compressible element between the proximal end and the distal end that is deformable, wherein the compressible element comprises a plurality of compressible posts spaced about an axis of the sleeve, and wherein the sleeve includes a projection within an opening of the housing.
