Title:Pen-type injector
Abstract: A pen-type injector is improved so that a user may select a delivery dose of a medicinal product from a multidose cartridge. The injector includes a housing, the cartridge containing the medicinal product retained within the housing, a piston rod, a dose selecting member to select the dose of the medicinal product to be expelled, and a drive member to expel the selected dose of the medicinal product. The housing is formed unitary so that the dose selecting member and the drive member are moveably retained within the housing. The injector may include a ratchet associated with an insert to ensure the piston rod only rotates in a single direction through the insert, a button located on the drive sleeve, and a clutch which upon depression of the button prevents rotation between the dose dial sleeve and the drive sleeve.

Claims:1. A drug delivery device comprising: a housing; a dose dial sleeve that can be rotated out of the housing to select a dose of a product contained within a cartridge, the dose dial sleeve provided with graphics on an outer surface; a rotatable piston rod for expelling the selected dose of the product wherein the housing comprises a unitary housing within which the dose dial sleeve and the piston rod are moveably retained and a cylindrical insert rotationally and axially fixed to the housing and threadedly engaged to the piston rod, where the cylindrical insert has a cylindrical portion extending longitudinally in a proximal direction enclosing a portion of the piston rod wherein the unitary housing is configured to completely enclose the cartridge, the dose dial sleeve, the piston rod, and the cylindrical insert.

2. The drug delivery device of claim 1 wherein the dose dial sleeve is threadedly engaged to the housing.

3. The drug delivery device of claim 1 wherein the rotatable piston rod rotates during an injection step.

4. The drug delivery device of claim 1 wherein the dose dial sleeve rotates during an injection step.

5. The drug delivery device of claim 1 further comprising a nut element splined to the dose dial sleeve.

6. The drug delivery device of claim 5 wherein during a dose selecting step when the dose dial sleeve is rotated to select the dose, the nut element moves along with the rotating dose dial sleeve.

7. The drug delivery device of claim 6 wherein a position of the nut element corresponds to an amount of the product remaining within the cartridge.

8. The drug delivery device of claim 1 wherein the dose dial sleeve is threadedly engaged to a portion of the cylindrical insert.

9. The drug delivery device of claim 1 wherein the rotatable piston rod does not rotate during a dose selecting step.

10. The drug delivery device of claim 1 wherein the piston rod comprises at least one screw thread.

11. The drug delivery device of claim 1 wherein the insert is located in the housing and through which the piston rod travels.

12. The drug delivery device of claim 11 further comprising a ratchet associated with the insert so as to help ensure that the piston rod rotates in a single direction through the insert.

13. A drug delivery device comprising: a housing; a piston rod comprising a screw thread; an insert located in the housing and through which the piston rod may rotate; a ratchet associated with the insert to ensure the piston rod only rotates in a single direction through the insert; a dose dial sleeve rotatable with respect to the housing and the insert, the dose dial sleeve provided with graphics on an outer surface; a drive sleeve which is axially displaceable but not rotatable with respect to the piston rod; a button located on the drive sleeve and rotatable with respect to the drive sleeve, and a clutch which upon depression of the button prevents rotation between the dose dial sleeve and the drive sleeve wherein the housing is configured to completely enclose a cartridge, the dose dial sleeve, the piston rod, and the insert.

14. The drug delivery device of claim 13 wherein the insert comprises a web having an opening, a first cylindrical portion extending from a first side of the web, a boss provided on a second side of the web and a cylindrical portion extending away from the web about a periphery of the boss.

15. The drug delivery device of claim 13 wherein the insert comprises a web having an opening, a first cylindrical portion extending from a first side of the web, a boss provided on a second side of the web, a radial flange extending from the boss, the radial flange being spaced from the web, and a cylindrical portion extending away from the web about a periphery of the radial flange.

16. The drug delivery device of claim 13 characterized in that the dose dial sleeve comprises a first cylindrical portion rigidly connected to a second generally cylindrical portion, wherein an inner surface of the first portion of the dose dial sleeve and an outer surface of a third cylindrical portion of the insert include interengaging features to provide a helical thread between the insert and the dose dial sleeve.

17. The drug delivery device of claim 16 characterized in that the second generally cylindrical portion comprises a first cylindrical section and a second cylindrical section connected by a shoulder, the first section being rigidly keyed to an inner surface of the first portion of the dose dial sleeve, and the second section having an outer diameter equal to an outer diameter of the housing.

18. The drug delivery device of claim 16 characterized in that the second generally cylindrical portion comprises a first cylindrical section and a second cylindrical section connected by a radial flange extending from a part of the second section, the first section being rigidly keyed to an inner surface of the first portion of the dose dial sleeve, and the second section having an outer diameter equal to an outer diameter of the housing.

19. The drug delivery device of claim 13 wherein the drive sleeve further comprises a central receiving area having a peripheral recess, and wherein the button being of generally "T" shaped configuration comprising a stem that is retained within the receiving area by co-operation between a peripheral bead provided on the stem retained in the peripheral recess provided in the central receiving area.

20. The drug delivery device of claim 13 wherein a second end of the piston rod comprises a generally U-shape comprising a first and a second limb, each of the first and the second limb of the U-shape being received within a second part of the drive sleeve.
