Title:Methods of using prodrugs of pregabalin
Abstract: The present invention provides prodrugs of GABA analogs, pharmaceutical compositions of prodrugs of GABA analogs and methods for making prodrugs of GABA analogs. The present invention also provides methods for using prodrugs of GABA analogs and methods for using pharmaceutical compositions of prodrugs of GABA analogs for treating or preventing common diseases and/or disorders.

Claims:1. A method of treating a disease or disorder selected from neuropathic pain, anxiety, ethanol withdrawal syndrome, insomnia, and epilepsy comprising administering to a patient in need thereof a compound of formula (VIII): ##STR00062## or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, wherein: n=0; R.sup.7 and R.sup.14 are each hydrogen; R.sup.13 is selected from the group consisting of methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, isopropyl, n-butyl, isobutyl and sec-butyl; and R.sup.25 is selected from the group consisting of methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, isopropyl, n-butyl, isobutyl, sec-butyl, n-pentyl, isopentyl, sec-pentyl, neopentyl, phenyl and 1,1-diethoxyethyl.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein R.sup.13 is methyl.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein R.sup.25 is methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, isopropyl, or phenyl.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein said disease or disorder is neuropathic pain.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein said disease or disorder is anxiety.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein said disease or disorder is ethanol withdrawal syndrome.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein said disease or disorder is insomnia.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein said disease or disorder is epilepsy.

9. The method of claim 1 wherein the compound has the formula: ##STR00063##

10. The method of claim 1 wherein the compound has the formula: ##STR00064##

11. The method of claim 1 wherein the compound has the formula: ##STR00065##

12. A method of treating a disease or disorder selected from neuropathic pain, anxiety, ethanol withdrawal syndrome, insomnia, and epilepsy comprising administering to a patient in need thereof a pharmaceutical composition comprising a compound of formula (VIII): ##STR00066## or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, and a pharmaceutically acceptable vehicle, wherein: n=0; R.sup.7 and R.sup.14 are each hydrogen; R.sup.13 is selected from the group consisting of methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, isopropyl, n-butyl, isobutyl and sec-butyl; and R.sup.25 is selected from the group consisting of methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, isopropyl, n-butyl, isobutyl, sec-butyl, n-pentyl, isopentyl, sec-pentyl, neopentyl, phenyl and 1,1-diethoxyethyl.

13. The method of claim 12 wherein R.sup.13 is methyl.

14. The method of claim 12 wherein R.sup.25 is methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, isopropyl, or phenyl.

15. The method of claim 12 wherein said disease or disorder is neuropathic pain.

16. The method of claim 12 wherein said disease or disorder is anxiety.

17. The method of claim 12 wherein said disease or disorder is ethanol withdrawal syndrome.

18. The method of claim 12 wherein said disease or disorder is insomnia.

19. The method of claim 12 wherein said disease or disorder is epilepsy.

20. The method of claim 12 wherein the compound has the formula: ##STR00067##

21. The method of claim 12 wherein the compound has the formula: ##STR00068##

22. The method of claim 12 wherein the compound has the formula: ##STR00069##

23. The method of claim 12 wherein the pharmaceutical composition is an oral sustained release dosage formula.
