Title: Compositions for inhibition of membrane fusion-associated events, including influenza virus transmission
Abstract:The present invention relates to viral peptides referred to as "DP107- and DP178-like" peptides. Specifically, the invention relates to isolated influenza A DP107- and DP178-like peptides which are identified by sequence search motif algorithms. The peptides of the invention exhibit antiviral activity believed to result from inhibition of viral induced fusogenic events.

Assignee: Trimeris, Inc. (Durham, NC) Duke University (Durham, NC)
Filing Date:Jun 07, 1995
Application Number:08/475,668
Claims:1. An isolated peptide region of an influenza A virus protein, said region comprising an amino acid sequence identified by an ALLMOT15, 107.times.178.times.4, or PLZIP sequence search motif.

2. An isolated peptide of the formula

X-QAAIDQINGKLNRVIEKTNEKFHQIEKEFSEVEGRIQDLEKYVEDTKIDLWSYNAELLVALENQHTI-Z (SEQ ID NO. 210); or

X-AADLKSTQAAIDQINGKLNRVIEKTNEKFHQIEKEFSEVEGRIQDLEKYVEDTKIDLWSYNAELLVALENQHT IDLT-Z (SEQ ID NO. 211),

in which:

X comprises an amino group, an acetyl group, a 9-fluoroenylmethoxy-carbonyl group, a hydrophobic group, or a macromolecular carrier group; and

Z comprises a carboxyl group, an amido group, a hydrophobic group, or a macromolecular carrier group.

3. The peptide of claim 2 of the formula:

X-QAAIDQINGKLNRVIEKTNEKFHQIEKEFSEVEGRIQDLEKYVEDTKIDLWSYNAELLVALENQHTI-Z (SEQ ID NO. 210).

4. The peptide of claim 2 of the formula:

X-AADLKSTQAAIDQINGKLNRVIEKTNEKFHQIEKEFSEVEGRIQDLEKYVEDTKIDLWSYNAELLVALENQHT IDLT-Z (SEQ ID NO. 211).

5. The peptide of claim 3 or 4, wherein X is an acetyl group and Z is an amido group.
