Abstract:A polyanhydride suitable for use as a matrix material in controlled delivery devices polymerized from monomers of the general formula: ##STR1## wherein R, R', and R" are the same or a different aliphatic chain of C.sub.1 to C.sub.20 or hydrogen; m, n, and p are integers from 0 and 20; y is 0 or 1; and, if y is 0, one of R or R' is not H.

Claims:1. A polyanhydride polymerized from monomers of the group consisting of dimers and trimers of unsaturated fatty acids and dimers and trimers of non-naturally occurring unsaturated aliphatic acids in the form of a film.

2. A composition comprising:

(i) a polyanhydride polymerized from monomers of a polyanhydride polymerized from monomers of the group consisting of dimers and trimers of unsaturated fatty acids and dimers and trimers of non-naturally occurring unsaturated aliphatic acids; and

(ii) a substance to be delivered.

3. The polyanhydride of claim 2 wherein the substance is a bioactive compound.

4. The polyanhydride of claim 3 wherein the substance is selected from the group consisting of chemotherapeutic agents, antibiotics, antiinflammatories, and anticoagulants.

5. A polyanhydride polymerized from monomers of the group consisting of dimers and trimers of unsaturated fatty acids and dimers and trimers of non-naturally occurring unsaturated aliphatic acids in the form of a laminate for degradable or nondegradable fabrics.

6. A polyanhydride polymerized from monomers of the groups consisting of dimers and trimers of unsaturated fatty acids and dimers and trimers of non-naturally occurring unsaturated aliphatic acids used as a coating for implantable devices.

7. A method for providing a biocompatible, biodegradable polyanhydride comprising polymerizing monomers of the group consisting of dimers and trimers of unsaturated fatty acids and dimers and trimers of non-naturally occurring unsaturated aliphatic acids.

8. The method of claim 7, further comprising selecting the monomer from the group consisting of dimers and trimers of naturally occurring unsaturated fatty acids.

9. The method of claim 7, further comprising selecting the monomer from the group consisting of dimers and trimers of oleic, erucic, lauroleic, myristoleic, gadoleic, ricinoleic, palmitoleic, linoleic, linolenic, and arachidonic acids.

10. The method of claim 7, further comprising selecting the monomer from the group consisting of dimers and trimers of non-naturally occurring unsaturated aliphatic acids.

11. The method of claim 7, further comprising selecting the monomer from the group consisting of dimers and trimers of acrylic, methacrylic, fumaric, crotonic, vinyl acetic (3-butenoic), isocrotonic, allylacetic (4-pentenoic), hexenoic and undecylenic acids.

12. The method of claim 7, further comprising copolymerizing the monomers of claim 1 with one or more aliphatic dicarboxylic acids selected from the group consisting of sebacic acid, isophthalic acid, adipic acid, 1,10-dodecanedioic acid, and 1,3-bis(p-carboxyphenoxy)propane.

13. The method of claim 7, wherein the method of polymerization is melt polycondensation.

14. The method of claim 7, wherein the method of polymerization is solution polymerization.

15. The method of claim 7, further comprising casting the polyanhydride as a film.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein the polyanhydride film is solvent cast.

17. The method of claim 15, wherein the polyanhydride film is melt cast.

18. The method of claim 7, further comprising incorporating into the polyanhydride a substance to be released.

19. The method of claim 18, wherein the substance is a bioactive compound.

20. The method of claim 19, further comprising selecting the substance from the group consisting of chemotherapeutic agents, antibiotics, antiinflammatories, and anticoagulants.

21. The method of claim 7, further comprising fabricating the polyanhydride into a laminate for degradable or nondegradable fabrics.

22. The method of claim 7, further comprising providing the polyanhydride as a barrier for adhesion prevention.

23. The method of claim 19, further comprising fabricating the polyanhydride for targeted release of drugs to a specific organ.

24. The method of claim 7, further comprising fabricating the polyanhydride for use in guided tissue regeneration on periodontal disease.

25. The method of claim 7, further comprising fabricating the polyanhydride for use as a tube for nerve generation.

26. The method of claim 7, further comprising applying the polyanhydride as a coating on implantable devices.

27. The method of claim 7, further comprising implanting the polyanhydride into the body.
