|Claims:||1. A process for preparing a lactone of the formula ##STR11## which process comprises hydrolyzing, under very mild conditions, an alkyl 3-dioxolanyl-2,2-difluoro-3-hydroxypropionate of the formula ##STR12## wherein R.sup.4 and R.sup.5 are independently C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 alkyl. |
2. A process of claim 1 wherein the propionate is a compound wherein R.sup.4 and R.sup.5 are methyl groups.
3. A process of claim 2 wherein the hydrolysis reagent is a mildly acidic ion exchange resin.
