|Claims:||1. A compound of the formula |
R is an unsubstituted phenyl radical, a 3-substituted phenyl radical, a 4-substituted phenyl radical or a 3,4-disubstituted phenyl radical wherein the substituents are hydroxy or lower alkoxy, phenyloxy or benzyloxy;
R.sub.1 is hydrogen or lower alkyl;
R.sub.2 is --CN; and
R.sub.3 is an acyl radical containing less than about 30 carbon atoms and having at least one asymmetric carbon atom, the acyl radical being predominantly in either the d or l form and being derived from a carboxylic or a sulfonic acid.
2. The compound of claim 1 wherein R is a 3,4-disubstituted phenyl radical.
3. The compound of claim 1 wherein R.sub.1 is hydrogen.
4. The compound of claim 1 wherein R.sub.1 is methyl.
5. The compound of claim 1 wherein R.sub.3 is the menthoxyacetyl radical.
