Abstract: | 2-(6-Methoxy-2-naphthyl)propionic acid is prepared by reacting a compound having the formula with hydrogen in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst until a 2-(6-methoxy-2-naphthyl)propionate is formed, and hydrolyzing the ester group of the propionate. In the formula, R.sup.1 is an alkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl or alkenyl group and R.sup.2 is --OR.sup.3, --SR.sup.3, wherein R.sup.3, R.sup.5 and R.sup.6 each is alkyl or cycloalkyl; R.sup.4 is alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or aralkyl; and R.sup.5 and R.sup.6 together can be ethylene or a polymethylene group having from three to seven carbons. The product has anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and anti-pyretic activities. |
