Patent Claims:	1. A preserved platelet composition, comprising: platelets; an effective amount of a photosensitizer for pathogen inactivation; a platelet activation inhibitor; and an anticoagulant, wherein the platelet activation inhibitor is selected from the group consisting of eptifibatide, tirofiban, abciximab, lefradafiban, sibrafiban, orbofiban, xemilofiban, lotrafiban, XJ757 and XR299, wherein the anticoagulant is a direct inhibitor of factor Xa or factor IIa, wherein the preserved platelet composition is sterilized by exposure to a radiation at a wavelength that sensitizes the photosensitizer, and wherein the platelet composition is substantially free of red blood cells. 2. The platelet preservation composition of claim 1, wherein the photosensitizer comprises riboflavin, psoralen or methylene blue. 3. The composition of claim 1, wherein the anticoagulant is selected from the group consisting of DX-9065a, RPR-120844, BX-807834, SEL-1915, SEL-2219, SEL-2489 and SEL-2711. 4. The composition of claim 1, wherein the anticoagulant is selected from the group consisting of DUP714, hirulog and melgatran. 5. The composition of claim 1, further comprising a hemoglobin-based oxygen carrier.
