Summary for Patent: 8,298,556
Title:Methods and related compositions for the non-surgical removal of fat
Abstract: Compositions and methods useful in the non-surgical removal of localized fat deposits in patients in need thereof using pharmacologically active detergents are disclosed. The pharmacologically active detergent compositions can additionally include anti-inflammatory agents, analgesics, dispersion agents and pharmaceutically acceptable excipients but do not contain phosphotidylcholine. The pharmacologically active detergent compositions are useful for treating localized accumulations of fat including lower eyelid fat herniation, lipodystrophy and fat deposits associated with cellulite and do not require surgical procedures such as liposuction.

Patent Claims:1. A non-liposuction method for treating unwanted localized fat accumulation in a subject having and desiring removal of said localized fat accumulation, which method comprises contacting said accumulation with a composition comprising a deoxycholate salt and a pharmaceutically acceptable excipient, wherein the deoxycholate salt is present at a concentration of about 0.5% (w/v), 1% (w/v), 2.5% (w/v), or 5% (w/v) in said composition, and said composition does not contain phosphatidylcholine for use as an active ingredient for said treating.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein said deoxycholate salt is sodium deoxycholate.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein said localized fat accumulation is adipose tissue.

4. The method of claim 2, wherein said pharmaceutically acceptable excipient is selected from the group consisting of: water, a buffer, benzyl alcohol, and combinations thereof.

5. A non-liposuction method for dissolving unwanted localized fat in a subject having and desiring removal of said localized fat, which method comprises injecting to said fat an aqueous composition comprising a deoxycholate salt and a pharmaceutically acceptable excipient, wherein the deoxycholate salt is present at a concentration of about 0.5% (w/v), 1% (w/v), 2.5% (w/v), or 5% (w/v) in said composition, and said composition does not contain phosphatidylcholine for use as an active ingredient for said dissolving.

6. A non-liposuction method for reducing unwanted localized fat deposit in a subject having and desiring removal of said localized fat deposit, which method comprises injecting to said deposit an aqueous composition consisting of sodium deoxycholate and a pharmaceutically acceptable excipient selected from the group consisting of: water, a buffer, benzyl alcohol, and combinations thereof, wherein the sodium deoxycholate is present at a concentration of about 0.5% (w/v), 1% (w/v), 2.5% (w/v), or 5% (w/v) in said composition, and said composition does not contain phosphatidylcholine.

7. A non-liposuction method for treating unwanted localized fat accumulation in a subject having and desiring removal of said localized fat accumulation, which method comprises injecting to said accumulation a composition comprising deoxycholic acid effective in treating said fat and a pharmaceutically acceptable excipient, wherein said deoxycholic acid is present at a concentration of about 0.5% (w/v), 1% (w/v), 2.5% (w/v), or 5% (w/v) in said composition, and said composition does not contain phosphatidylcholine for use as an active ingredient for said treating.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein said composition comprises a sodium salt of deoxycholic acid.

9. The method of claim 7, wherein said localized fat accumulation is adipose tissue.

10. The method of any one of claims 5, 7, or 8, wherein said pharmaceutically acceptable excipient is selected from the group consisting of: water, a buffer, benzyl alcohol, and combinations thereof.

11. The method of any one of claim 1 or 5-7, wherein said composition further comprises at least one additional agent selected from the group consisting of an anti-inflammatory agent, an analgesics agent, a hyaluronidase, and a collagenase.
