A compound or stereoisomers or pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof, wherein the compound is of formula (Ia): ##STR00876## wherein U.sub.1 and U.sub.2 are independently selected from CH.sub.2 and O with the proviso that when U.sub.1 is O then R.sup.1a is not a N-bonded substituent, and when U.sub.2 is O then R.sup.1b is not a N-bonded substituent; R.sup.1a and R.sup.1b are independently selected from a 3- to 12-membered heterocyclic group containing from 1 to 4 ring nitrogen atoms and optionally containing from 1 to 4 other heteroatoms selected from the group consisting of oxygen and sulfur, that group being optionally substituted by C.sub.1-C.sub.8-alkyl, or R.sup.1a and R.sup.1b are independently selected from --NH--C.sub.1-C.sub.8-alkylcarbonyl, and --NH--C.sub.3-C.sub.8-cycloalkylcarbonyl, or R.sup.1a and R.sup.1b are independently selected from NH--C.sub.1-C.sub.8-alkyl, NHC(O)C.sub.1-C.sub.8-hydroxyalkyl, NHCO.sub.2C.sub.1-C.sub.8-alkyl, and NHCO.sub.2C.sub.1-C.sub.8-hydroxyalkyl; T.sup.1a and R.sup.1b are independently selected from C.sub.1-C.sub.8-hydroxyalkyl, and CH.sub.2--O--C.sub.1-C.sub.8-alkyl; R.sup.2a and R.sup.2b are independently selected from hydrogen, C.sub.1-C.sub.8-alkyl optionally substituted by OH, C.sub.3-C.sub.15-carbocyclic group, or C.sub.6-C.sub.10-aryl optionally substituted by OH, halogen, or O--C.sub.1-C.sub.8-alkyl, or R.sup.2a and R.sup.2b are independently C.sub.7-C.sub.14-aralkyl optionally substituted by OH, halogen, or CN; and L is selected from ##STR00877## 2. A pharmaceutical composition, comprising: the compound according to claim 1, and a pharmaceutically acceptable diluent or carrier.
