Summary for Patent: 7,976,199
Title:Apparatus and method for pathway or similar lighting
Abstract: An apparatus, method, and system for lighting target areas with bollard or pagoda style or type lights in a controlled and efficient manner. The apparatus includes a housing with a light source, optic system, and a control circuit. The light source and optic system are configured to produce a highly controlled output beam pattern and shield from normal viewing angles direct sight of the source. This enables control of glare and spill light which can improve effectiveness, efficiency, and energy usage.

Assignee: Musco Corporation (Oskaloosa, IA)
Application Number:12/113,838
Patent Claims:1. A bollard-type light comprising: a. an elongated housing having an opening along a side into an interior space; b. a light source mounted within the interior space and generating a radiation pattern; and c. at least one reflective surface which captures a substantial amount of the radiation from the radiation pattern and creates a controlled output pattern with relatively defined perimeter edges, wherein a first said reflective surface is elongated in the horizontal direction and is positioned in the radiation pattern in front of the light source and directs incident light back towards the direction of the light but somewhat downwardly and a second said reflective surface reflects incident light from the first reflective surface forwardly and out of the opening, but spreads light in opposite lateral directions.

2. The light of claim 1 further comprising shielding the light source from most direct views.

3. The light of claim 2 further comprising placing blocking surfaces relative the light source and the reflecting surfaces to assist in control of perimeter cut-off of the pattern.

4. The light of claim 1 further comprising spreading the light so that the pattern has relatively even intensity throughout the pattern.

5. A lighting fixture comprising: a. a housing; b. an interior chamber in the housing, the interior chamber defined by a top, a bottom, a front, a back, and opposite sides; c. a light source mounted at or towards the top of the interior chamber and adapted to produce a light source output pattern; d. an opening in the housing to the front of the interior chamber having perimeter margins beginning below the light source and extending towards the bottom of the interior chamber; e. a reflective surface at or near the back of the interior chamber and adapted to spread incident light from the light source output pattern of the light source substantially evenly out the opening of the housing, outwardly, downwardly, and divergingly laterally relative the bottom and opposite sides of the interior chamber; f. the perimeter margins of the opening positioned relative to the light spread by the reflective surface to assist in producing relatively sharp outer margins of a fixture light output pattern.

6. The lighting fixture of claim 5 further comprising a second reflective surface facing the light source between the top and front of the interior of the chamber and the light source and adapted to reflect incident light from the light source output pattern to the reflective surface at or near the back of the interior chamber.

7. The lighting fixture of claim 5 further comprising a third reflective surface at each opposite side of the interior chamber and adapted to reflect incident light from the light source output pattern within the fixture light output pattern.

8. The lighting fixture of claim 5 further comprising a fourth reflective surface at the bottom of the interior chamber and adapted to reflect incident light from the light source output pattern within the fixture light output pattern.

9. The lighting fixture of claim 5 further comprising a lens over the opening.

10. The lighting fixture of claim 5 wherein the light source comprises a solid state light source.

11. The lighting fixture of claim 10 wherein the solid state light source comprising a side emitting LED.

12. The lighting fixture of claim 10 further comprising a member comprising a mounting surface and a heat sink for the solid state light source.

13. The lighting fixture of claim 5 wherein the light source output pattern is substantially side-emitting, bat wing, or Lambertian.

14. The lighting fixture of claim 5 wherein the reflective surface at or near the back of the interior chamber is a removable component.

15. The lighting fixture of claim 5 wherein the reflective surface at or near the back of the interior chamber is integrated with the housing.

16. The lighting fixture of claim 5 wherein the reflective surface at or near the back of the interior chamber is at least substantially convex relative to one axis.

17. The lighting fixture of claim 5 further comprising a mounting structure associated with the housing adapted to mount the fixture to a support.

18. The lighting fixture of claim 17 wherein the mounting structure comprises a receiver for a vertical post.

19. The lighting fixture of claim 17 wherein the mounting structure comprises a bracket adapted for attachment to a vertical surface.
