Summary for Patent: 7,090,861
Title:Sustained release delivery systems for solutes
Abstract: The present invention relates to devices that allow for linear, sustained-release of solutes with adjustable initial-release kinetics. In particular, the present invention relates to devices for delivering substances to the body of an animal. The present invention also relates to methods for delivering solutes in a constant, sustained-release fashion using the devices of the invention.

Assignee: Farrington Pharmaceuticals, LLC (Chapel Hill, NC)
Application Number:10/392,012
Patent Claims:1. A device for continuous, linear, sustained release of one of more solutes comprising at least one dispenser, said dispenser comprising i) a tubular-shaped solute reservoir element having a cavity providing a gradient-forming element, said cavity comprising a longitudinal sector thereof, said dispenser having flat internal surfaces therein; ii) said solute reservoir element surrounded by a fluid-impervious and solute-impervious wall; and iii) rows of openings in said wall along at least one of said flat intemal surfaces of said dispenser parallel to the longitudinal axis of the device, said rows of openings more closely spaced towards the center of said dispenser and more distantly spaced towards the exterior thereof.

2. The device of claim 1 having rows of release orifices along both said flat internal surfaces of said dispenser.

3. The device of claim 1, wherein said solute reservoir element is empty.

4. The device of claim 1, wherein said solute reservoir element contains a porous substrate.

5. The device of claim 1, wherein said one or more solutes is a therapeutic agent.

6. The device of claim 4 wherein said therapeutic agent is selected from the group consisting of a calcium salt, parathyroid hormone, a antihypertensive agent, a diuretic, a sympatholytic drug, a vasodilator, a calcium channel blocker, an analgesic, an opioid, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agent, an antihistamine, an antidepressant, a hypnotic, a sedative, an antiepileptic agent, an antiarrhythmic agent, an antiparasitic agent, an antimicrobial agent, chloroquine, an anti-Parkinson agent, an antineoplastic agent, a contraceptive, a hypoglycemic, an electrolyte, a vitamin, a mineral, a nutriceutical, a local anesthetic, a diagnostic agent, a peptide growth factor, a hormone, a cytokine, a stimulant, an amphetamine, methylphenidate, an antianxiety agent, a benzodiazepine, a hematopoietic agent, an erythropoietin, a stem cell factor, an interleukins, and mixtures thereof.

7. The device of claim 1, wherein said one or more solutes is an erythropoietin.

8. The device of claim 1, wherein said one or more solutes is chloroquine.

9. The device of claim 1, wherein said one or more solutes is dissolved in a solvent or pharmaceutically acceptable vehicle.

10. The device of claim 1, wherein said one or more solutes is dry.

11. The device of claim 1, wherein said one or more solutes is not water soluble.

12. The device of claim 1 which contains a solute-modifying agent.

13. The device of claim 1 wherein said tubular-shaped solute reservoir element is cylindrical shaped.

14. A method for delivering one or more solutes in a linear, sustained release fashion, comprising administering to a desired site of delivery at least one device in accordance with claim 1.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein said site of delivery is oral, sub-lingual, rectal, vaginal, subdermal, intramuscular, ocular, topical, nasal, aurical, or intravenous.

16. The method of claim 14 wherein said site of delivery is parenteral.

17. A kit comprising at least one device in accordance with claim 1.
