Abstract:A method for treating hypoparathyroidism and/or hypocalcemia by local administration of a neurotoxin, such as a botulinum toxin, to a parathyroid gland, thereby reducing an inhibitory effect upon parathyroid hormone secretion. A method for treating hyperparathyroidism and/or hypercalcemia by local administration of a neurotoxin, such as a botulinum toxin, to a sympathetic ganglion which innervates a parathyroid hormone secreting parathyroid cell, thereby reducing a stimulatory effect upon parathyroid hormone secretion.

Patent Claims:1. A method for treating hypoparathyroidism, the method comprising the step of local administration in vivo to a parathyroid gland of a human patient of a therapeutically effective amount of a botulinum toxin_type A, B, C.sub.1, D, E, F or G, thereby increasing a deficient parathyroid hormone secretion from a parathyroid hormone secreting parathyroid cell and treating hypoparathyroidism.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the botulinum toxin is botulinum toxin type A.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the botulinum toxin is administered in an amount of between 10.sup.-3 units per kg of patient weight and 35 units per kg of patient weight.

4. A method for treating hypoparathyroidism, the method comprising the step of local administration in vivo to a parathyroid gland of a human patient of a therapeutically effective amount of a botulinum toxin type A, thereby increasing a deficient parathyroid hormone secretion from a parathyroid hormone secreting parathyroid cell and treating hypoparathyroidism.
