2. The compound of claim 1, wherein: R.sup.1 is --H; R.sup.2 is --H; R.sup.3 is --H; R.sup.4 is --H; R.sup.5 is --H; R.sup.6 is --C.sub.1-8-alkyl or halo-C.sub.1-8-alkyl; R.sup.7 is --C.sub.1-8-alkyl; R.sup.8 is --C.sub.1-8-alkyl; X is --N; and Y is --CR.sup.3.

3. The compound of claim 1, wherein A has the following formula: ##STR00051##

4. The compound of claim 2, wherein B is --CH.sub.2-ferrocenyl.

5. The compound of claim 4, wherein X.sup.1 is --NH-- and X.sup.2 is --NH--.

6. The compound of claim 5, wherein n is 4.

7. The compound of claim 6, wherein m is 3 and p is 3.

8. The compound of claim 1, wherein B is --CH.sub.2-ferrocenyl.

9. The compound of claim 1, wherein X.sup.1 is --NH-- and X.sup.2 is --NH--.

10. The compound of claim 1, wherein n is 4.

11. The compound of claim 1, wherein m is 3 and p is 3.

12. The compound of claim 1, wherein the compound is: ##STR00052##

13. A pharmaceutical composition comprising a compound of claim 1 and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier.

14. A kit comprising a compound of claim 1.

15. A method for detecting heat shock protein 90 in a sample, wherein the method comprises the following steps: a) contacting the sample with the compound of claim 1, wherein R is a detection moiety; and b) detecting a signal from the detection moiety.

16. A method for detecting cancer in a subject, wherein the method comprises the following steps: a) contacting a biological sample from the subject with the compound of claim 1, wherein R is a detection moiety; and b) detecting a signal from the detection moiety.

17. The method of claim 16, wherein the cancer is selected from the group consisting of breast cancer, prostate cancer, non-small cell lung cancer, colorectal cancer, pancreatic cancer, ovarian cancer and melanoma.

18. A method for treating cancer in a subject, wherein the method comprises administering to the subject in need thereof a therapeutically effective amount of the compound of claim 1.

19. The method of claim 18, wherein the subject has a cancer selected from the group consisting of breast cancer, prostate cancer, non-small cell lung cancer, colorectal cancer, pancreatic cancer, ovarian cancer and melanoma.
