Using data from DrugPatentWatch Fred Ledley and his research group at the Center for Integration of Science and Industry at Bentley University published a paper investigating the involvement of government funding in recently approved drugs.
They focused on the 356 new drugs approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration from 2010-2019 and found:
- Research on the 356 drugs comprised 244,000 publications, of which 39,000 were supported by NIH funding
- NIH funding also produced 22,000 patents, which provided marketing exclusivity for 27 (8.6%) of the drugs
