Claims: | 1. A method of treating a patient suffering from cognitive impairment caused by at least one neurodegenerative disease selected from Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease, which comprises administering to said patient a therapeutically effective amount of a carbostyril compound of formula (1), or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt, or solvate thereof selected from hemihydrates, hydrates, and alcoholates, wherein said patient is a mammal: ##STR00003## wherein the carbon-carbon bond between 3- and 4-positions in the carbostyril skeleton is a single or a double bond. 2. The method of claim 1 wherein the neurodegenerative disease is Alzheimer's disease. 3. The method of claim 1 wherein the neurodegenerative disease is Parkinson's disease. 4. A method of treating a patient suffering from cognitive impairment caused by Alzheimer's disease, which comprises administering to said patient a therapeutically effective amount of a carbostyril compound, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt, or a solvate thereof selected from hemihyd rates, hydrates, and alcoholates, wherein said patient is a mammal, and wherein the carbostyril compound is 7-{4-[4-(2,3-dichlorophenyl)-1-piperazinyl]butoxy}-3,4-dihydrocarbostyril- . 5. A method of treating a patient suffering from cognitive impairment caused by Parkinson's disease, which comprises administering to said patient a therapeutically effective amount of a carbostyril compound, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt, or a solvate thereof selected from hemihydrates, hydrates, and alcoholates, wherein said patient is a mammal, and wherein the carbostyril compound is 7-{4-[4-(2,3-dichlorophenyl)-1- piperazinyl]butoxy}-3,4-dihydrocarbostyril. |
