Claims:	1. A compound of formula (II): ##STR14## where R.sup.1 is C.sub.3-5 alkyl optionally substituted by 1 or more halogen atoms; R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 are both hydroxy; R is XOH, where X is OCH.sub.2 CH.sub.2, or a protected derivative thereof, or R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 together form a bond in the 5-membered ring, or R is CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 OR' where R' is C.sub.1-6 alkyl or benzyl, and L is halogen or SR, or said hydroxy groups R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 are protected as groups OP.sup.1 and OP.sup.2 where P.sup.1 and P.sup.2 are protecting groups selected from the group consisting of C.sub.1-6 alkyl, benzyl, (C.sub.1-6 alkyl).sub.3 Si and C(O)C.sub.1-6 alkyl or said groups P.sup.1 and P.sup.2, together with the atoms to which they are attached, may form an alkylidene ring or an alkoxymethylidene ring. 2. A compound of formula (II): ##STR15## where R.sup.1 is n-propyl; R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 are both hydroxyl; R is OCH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 OH or a protected derivative thereof; and L is halogen or SR, or said hydroxyl groups R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 are protected as groups OP.sup.1 and OP.sup.2 where P.sup.1 and P.sup.2 are protecting groups selected from the group consisting of C.sub.1-6 alkyl, benzyl, C.sub.1-6 alkyl).sub.3 Si and C(O)C.sub.1-6 alkyl or said groups P.sup.1 and P.sup.2, together with the atoms to which they are attached, may form an alkylidene ring or an alkoxymethylidene ring.
