Title: Anhydrous topical skin preparations
Abstract:The present invention provides anhydrous compositions for topical delivery of a medicament comprising (A) a penetration enhancer/solvent selected from the group consisting of alcohol, propylene glycol, or a combination thereof; (B) a humectant/solvent selected from the group consisting of polyethylene glycol, glycerin, sorbitol, xylitol, or any combination of any of the foregoing; and (C) an anhydrous vehicle. In an alternate embodiment, the present invention provides anhydrous compositions for topical delivery of a medicament which comprise (A) a penetration enhancer/solvent selected from the group consisting of alcohol, propylene glycol, or a combination thereof; (B) a humectant/solvent selected from the group consisting of polyethylene glycol, glycerin, sorbitol, xylitol or any combination of any of the foregoing; (C) an anhydrous vehicle; and (D) a medicament. Also provided are methods for topically delivering a medicament to an animal, such as a mammal or a human patient, in need of the medicament by topically administering to the animal the compositions of the present invention.

Claims:1. An anhydrous composition for topical delivery of one or more medicaments, said composition comprising:

(A) from about 1 to about 50% by weight of propylene glycol;

(B) from about 10 to about 80% by weight of polyethylene glycol and glycerin;

(C) an anhydrous vehicle; and

(D) medicaments comprising ketoconazole and desonide, based upon 100% weight of total composition.

2. A composition as defined in claim 1, wherein said medicaments are solubilized.

3. A composition as defined in claim 1, wherein said anhydrous vehicle is an alcohol which is the same as or different than propylene glycol.

4. A composition as defined in claim 1, further comprising a medicament selected from the group consisting of an antifungal agent, an antibacterial agent, an antiviral agent, an antiacne agent, an antiaging agent, an antipruritic agent, a photoprotection agent, a skin pigment modulator, a hair growth enhancer, a hair growth inhibitor, a hair removal agent, an antidandruff agent, an anti-seborrheic agent, an anti-psoriasis agent, an exfoliating agent, a wound healing agent, an anti-ectoparasitic agent, a serum modulator, an immunomodulator, a hormone, a botanical, a moisturizer, an astringent, a cleanser, a sensate, an antibiotic, an anti-irritant, an anesthetic, an analgesic, a steroid, an anti-inflammatory, a tissue healing substance, a tissue regenerating substance, a vitamin, an amino acid, a peptide, a mineral, a hydroxy acid, and any combination of any of the foregoing.

5. A composition as defined in claim 4, wherein said medicament is selected from the group consisting of an antifungal agent, a retinoid, an antibiotic, a glucocorticosteroid, and any combination of any of the foregoing.

6. A composition as defined in claim 5, wherein said medicament is tretinoin.

7. A composition as defined in claim 5, wherein said medicament is erythromycin.

8. A composition as defined in claim 1, further comprising:

(E) an emollient;

(F) a chelating agent;

(G) a pH adjuster;

(H) an antioxidant;

(I) a gelling agent;

(J) a viscosifier;

(K) a colorant;

(L) a fragrance;

(M) a UV stabilizer;

(N) a sunscreen; and

(O) any combination of any of the foregoing.

9. A composition as defined in claim 8, wherein said pH adjuster is selected from the group consisting of malic acid, lactic acid, citric acid, glycolic acid, benzoic acid, ascorbic acid, and any combination of any of the foregoing.

10. A composition as defined in claim 8, wherein said antioxidant is selected form the group consisting of propyl gallate, ascorbic acid, ascorbyl palmitate, butylated hydroxyanisole, butylated hydroxytoluene, tocopherol, and any combination of any of the foregoing.

11. A composition as defined in claim 8, wherein said viscosifier is hydroxypropyl cellulose.

12. A composition as defined in claim 8, comprising from about 1.0 to about 50 percent by weight of propylene glycol, from about 10 to about 80 percent by weight of polyethylene glycol and glycerin, from about 0.0001 to about 20 percent by weight of medicaments, from 0 to about 10 percent by weight of emollient and aesthetic enhancer combined, from 0 to about 2 percent by weight of chelating agent and pH adjuster combined, from 0 to about 2 percent by weight of antioxidant, from 0 to about 5 percent by weight of gelling agent and viscosifier combined, and anhydrous vehicle based upon 100 percent by weight of total composition.

13. A composition as defined in claim 10, wherein said gelling agent comprises hydroxypropyl cellulose in an amount of about 3 percent by weight based upon 100 percent by weight of total composition.

14. A composition as defined in claim 12, wherein said medicaments comprise ketoconazole in an amount of from about 0.05 to about 3 percent by weight based upon 100 percent by weight of total composition.

15. A composition as defined in claim 12, wherein said medicaments comprise ketoconazole in an amount of from about 0.5 to about 3 percent by weight based upon 100 percent by weight of total composition.

16. A composition as defined in claim 12, wherein said medicaments comprise ketoconazole in an amount of about 2 percent by weight based upon 100 percent by weight of total composition.

17. A composition as defined in claim 12, wherein said medicaments comprise desonide in an amount of from about 0.0001 to about 10 percent by weight, based upon 100 percent by weight of total composition.

18. A composition as defined in claim 12, wherein said medicaments comprise desonide in an amount of from about 0.01 to about 2.0 percent by weight based upon 100 percent by weight of total composition.

19. A composition as defined in claim 12, wherein said medicaments comprise desonide in an amount of about 0.05 percent by weight based upon 100 percent by weight of total composition.

20. A composition as defined in claim 12, wherein said medicaments comprise vitamin in an amount of from about 0.001 to about 0.5 percent by weight, based upon 100 percent by weight of total composition.

21. A composition as defined in claim 12, wherein said medicaments comprise tretinoin in an amount of from about 0.02 to about 0.1 percent by weight, based upon 100 percent by weight of total composition.

22. A composition as defined in claim 12, wherein said medicaments comprise antibiotic in an amount of from about 0.01 to about 10 percent by weight based upon 100 percent by weight of total composition.

23. A composition as defined in claim 12, wherein said medicaments comprise erythromycin in an amount of from about 0.1 to about 3 percent by weight based upon 100 percent by weight of total composition.

24. A method for topically delivering a medicament to an animal in need of said medicament, said method comprising topically administering to the animal a composition as defined in claim 1.

25. A composition as defined in claim 1, wherein the amount of propylene glycol and glycerin is greater than 10% by weight, based upon 100% weight of total composition.

26. A composition as defined in claim 1, wherein said composition comprises:

(A) about 20% by weight of propylene glycol;

(B) about 20% by weight of polyethylene glycol; and

(C) about 20% by weight of glycerin, based upon 100% weight of total composition.
